Getting the Most From Your Doctor's Appointments

Spending a few minutes before your visit with doctors can help you get the most out of your visit. We recommend the following:

  • Write down your list of medications on a piece of paper and have it out and ready to hand to the doctor at the time of your appointment. A considerable amount of your visit time can be spent reviewing which medications you are on, yet it is very important for the doctor to know this. Keeping a written list of your medications and keeping the list up to date (by writing down new medications as they are added, and crossing off medications when they have been discontinued) will speed up this process, allowing more time for other matters.

  • Write down a list of any new problems or symptoms you are having. Give your biggest concerns the top priority. Let your doctor know about the symptoms or concerns that bother you the most.

  • Write down a list of any questions you have. Don't be afraid to ask the doctor to explain things you don't understand.

  • If you have pain, try describing how bad it is on a scale from 0-10 (0 being no pain, 10 being a very severe pain). Also try to describe the quality of the pain (for example, is it an aching, burning, stinging, tightness, or sharp pain), what tends to make the pain occur, and what tends to make it better.

  • Talk about your feelings as well. Let your doctor know if you are feeling depressed, hopeless, or anxious, or if you have developed a lack of interest in things. You will feel better if you talk about these issues, and your doctor will be better able to understand and help you.

  • Consider bringing a friend or family member to your visit. Being able to talk to someone else about what occurred during your office visit can often be helpful. You might also want to take some notes about your visit.
